About Urban Worm Movement

Turning Waste Into Life

Sometimes a movement begins with a very simple question.

For Urban Worm Movement, that question came from my granddaughter:

“Why don't you recycle?”

She had a point.

So I started recycling.

But once I began paying attention to what I was throwing away, I realized just how much more could be kept out of the trash. Kitchen scraps, cardboard, paper, and other everyday materials didn't necessarily have to end up in a landfill.

That simple realization led me to vermicomposting — and eventually to Urban Worm Movement.

From Recycling to Worms, Soil & Growing Solutions

What began as an effort to reduce waste quickly became a fascination with worms, composting, soil, and the natural processes happening beneath our feet.

Red wigglers could take many of the kitchen scraps and paper products I had once thrown away and help transform them into vermicompost — a valuable soil amendment that could be returned to the garden.

The more I learned, the more I wanted to share.

Urban Worm Movement began with vermiculture, but our mission has grown along with our community.

Today, we offer Worms, Soil & Growing Solutions for people who want practical ways to compost, improve their soil, grow healthier plants, and make more thoughtful choices about what they throw away and what they put back into the earth.

Small Changes Add Up

You don't have to completely change your lifestyle to make a difference.

I didn't.

I started by recycling because my granddaughter asked me a question.

Then I began saving kitchen scraps.

Then paper and cardboard.

Then came the worms.

One small change led to another.

That philosophy is still at the heart of Urban Worm Movement. Whether you're starting your first worm bin, improving a backyard garden, growing vegetables on a patio, building healthier soil, or simply trying to send a little less waste to the landfill, there is a place to start.

Why Vermicomposting?

Worms are remarkable recyclers.

In a properly managed vermicomposting system, composting worms work alongside microorganisms to break down organic materials into vermicompost and worm castings that can be returned to the soil.

Instead of treating every kitchen scrap or piece of cardboard as waste, vermicomposting gives many of those materials another purpose.

It's a simple idea:

Feed the worms. Feed the soil. Grow something. Repeat.

More Than Worms

Although worms will always be at the heart of Urban Worm Movement, growing successfully involves an entire living system.

That's why we've expanded our shop to include carefully selected products for:

  • Vermicomposting and worm farming

  • Worm bins, bags, towers, bedding, and food

  • Composting

  • Soil health and soil amendments

  • Gardening and growing

  • Seeds and propagation

  • Beneficial insects and biological growing solutions

  • Hydroponic and specialty growing

  • Tools and supplies that help gardeners grow more successfully

Some products are supplied directly by Urban Worm Movement, while others are fulfilled by trusted supplier partners. This allows us to offer a broader selection of useful growing products without losing sight of where we started.

Choosing Products With Purpose

We believe customers deserve clear information about what they're buying.

When applicable, you'll find information on individual product pages about ingredients, intended uses, supplier fulfillment, and certifications or listings provided for that particular product.

Some products we carry may be OMRI Listed® for use in organic production. When an OMRI designation applies and has been verified for that specific product, we'll identify it accordingly.

We don't believe in putting a blanket label on an entire catalog when that label only applies to certain products.

We'd rather give you the information you need to make the choice that's right for your garden.

Learn With Us

Urban Worm Movement isn't just a store.

Education has been part of the mission from the beginning.

Vermicomposting can seem complicated when you're first introduced to moisture levels, bedding, feeding, temperatures, worm species, pests, harvesting castings, and all the other questions that come with keeping thousands of tiny composting partners happy.

It doesn't have to be.

Through Worm Wisdom, our guides, educational resources, and growing library of how-to information, our goal is to make vermiculture, composting, soil health, and growing easier to understand.

We'll tell you what works, explain why it works, and help you learn from the occasional mistake — because that's part of growing too.

Why “Urban Worm Movement”?

Because this was never supposed to be just about selling worms.

It's about movement.

Moving food scraps away from the trash and back into a productive cycle.

Moving nutrients back into the soil.

Moving people from wondering “Could I compost?” to discovering “I can do this.”

Moving from simply buying products to understanding the living systems those products support.

And sometimes, it's about one generation asking another generation a question that changes the way they look at something they've done their entire life.

That's how this movement started.
